Maybe a Time of Miracles aka Maybe a Time of Awesome
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is one of my favorite video games ever.
Just like the best video games do, S:S&SEP gave you interesting characters, sweet game play, and beautiful level design. The music was moving and integrated into the game perfectly. By the time you were done, you really felt like you’d completed an epic journey. For an iPad game, it was so much more than just Angry Birds. The game has rave reviews all over the internet, so don’t take my word for it. Check it out.
The guys over at Superbrothers are hell-bent on not making a sequel for S&SEP which is a damn shame. However, they were kind enough to hold a contest for fans to make some awesome art based off of the game.
Some of my favorites are posted below. I’ll start with this song, since it’s the best damn thing I’ve heard all day.
The song is called, “Maybe a Time of Miracles” by Mathazzar. It’s all sorts of badass. It’s a re-imagining of the game’s original score composed by Jim Guthrie.
Jim recorded some of the soundtrack on a Playstation. I bought it off of iTunes because I’m crazy like that, but you can also order it on vinyl.
The Scythian is the main character of the game. She’s a girl who carries a sword and a shield. Probably the best female video game character since Lara Croft.
The world that S&SEP takes place in is very much a part of the game. Everything from the rivers, to the trees, to the stupid sheep matters.
Throughout the game you are guided by this mysterious cigar smoking business dude. He sits in this giant throne and gives you helpful tips about what’s to come. He’s weird as hell, but also pretty funny. The illustration above is a very abstract depiction of his person.
There isn’t a lot of action in the game, but one of the better characters you spar with is a walking Grizzled Boor. He looks way more threatening here than he does in the game.
The Megatome is this book you steal from an evil mountain-top god. It’s definitely a MacGuffin for the game, and a pretty great use of the iPad’s rotating feature. This illustration is just perfect.
The Gogolithic Mass is this devilish looking creature that lives beneath a giant mountain. You steal his book and he gets all sorts of angry. He’s the games silent villain and he’s scary as shit.
Sheep are stupid.
It’s super popular to draw the Scythian and the Gogolothic Mass. You could understand why, they’re awesome looking.
Definitely go here and check out the other drawings. There are so many fantastic ones.
